National Treasure

 • TOP NOTCH (my top choices)
• HONORABLE MENTION (well worth watching)
• YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER (I like them but you might not)
• CLASSICS (Great movies up through the 1960s - many don't have any rating)

NATIONAL TREASURE (2004) - PG - TOP NOTCH
Nicolas Cage, Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha

Summary - Benjamin Franklin Gates descends from a family of treasure-seekers who've all hunted for the same thing: a war chest hidden by the Founding Fathers after the Revolutionary War. Ben's close to discovering its whereabouts, as is his competition, but the FBI is also hip to the hunt.

Cautions - Action violence.

Commentary - When people want a family friendly action adventure and I suggest National Treasure, the most common response is, "Isn't that the one with Nicolas Cage? No thanks. I hate Nicolas Cage."

Well, I'm not sure how to help someone get past that. It's too bad though because National Treasure is a fantastic film filled with action, adventure, great characters, smart writing, clever integration of history into modern-day society, and a touch of historical magic that definitely makes the viewer yearn to visit some of America's real treasures. I am speaking of those places where history was made and where simple ideas and principles became the foundation for a nation, principles we now know and recognize through such real-life national treasures as the Declaration of Independence and the Liberty Bell. This film pays honorable tribute and respect to them. Imagine it - your kids watching a film that makes it COOL to know your American History!

As much fun as National Treasure is to watch simply for the awe-inspiring imagery of some of America's most storied locales, the movie does contain an unexpected amount of politeness, honesty and goodness on top of exciting suspense and great action that proves to be well-staged and fun.

Also, and this is something I don't normally mention in my reviews, the DVD or Blu-ray discs have some great extras to help the young (and young at heart) learn more about cyphers and codes to create their own adventures! It's the whole package!

I submit that this is one of the greatest treasure hunt movies of all time, up there with Raiders of the Lost Ark but without any melting faces.
