Pee-Wee's Big Adventure
• TOP NOTCH (my top choices)
• HONORABLE MENTION (well worth watching)
• YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER (I like them but you might not)
• CLASSICS (Great movies up through the 1960s - many don't have any rating)
PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE (1985) - PG - YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER
Paul Reubens, Elizabeth Daily,
Summary - When eccentric man-child Pee-Wee Herman gets his beloved bike stolen in broad daylight, he sets out across the U.S. on the adventure of his life.
Cautions - There is one scene that might be scary to some. Pee-Wee is picked up by a spooky woman trucker who tells him a story of a terrible accident. After she says the line, "And when they pulled the body from the twisted, burning wreck, it looked like this!" What follows is a classic, Tim Burton style stop-motion animation of a freaky face with bulging eyes that only lasts for a second or two. I feel certain this won't bother teens but you might want to cover the eyes of younger viewers. It's meant to be spooky in a silly way.
Commentary - OK, so you are ready to dismiss this movie out of hand, right? I would encourage you to give it a try. Selling points include: It was Tim Burton's first feature film and it is written by the late great Phil Hartman. And let's not forget Danny Elfman's score!
Even if you think Pee-Wee's character is a bit too much for you, I think you'll find some genuinely funny moments. When I watched again recently I was pleasantly surprised by this sweet and quirky film.
