Searching for Bobby Fischer
• TOP NOTCH (my top choices)
• HONORABLE MENTION (well worth watching)
• YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER (I like them but you might not)
• CLASSICS (Great movies up through the 1960s - many don't have any rating)
SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISCHER (1993) - PG - TOP NOTCH
Joe Mantegna, Ben Kingsley, Max Pomeranc
Summary - A prepubescent chess prodigy refuses to harden himself in order to become a champion like the famous but unlikable Bobby Fischer.
Cautions - Nothing
Commentary - It's amazing to think that a film about something as relatively dry as watching chess, should be told with such visual excitement. A superior cast, visionary director and a fantastic cinematographer make this film one to remember.
But my favorite thing about this movie is the message - it's more important to be a good person than to be great at anything else. This is perfectly captured at the end as our seven year old champion puts his arm around a friend who didn't do as well in a tournament and says, "You want to know a secret? You're a much stronger player than I was when I was your age."
