The Queen of Katwe
• TOP NOTCH (my top choices)
• HONORABLE MENTION (well worth watching)
• YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER (I like them but you might not)
• CLASSICS (Great movies up through the 1960s - many don't have any rating)
THE QUEEN OF KATWE (2016) - PG - HONORABLE MENTION
Madina Nalwanga, David Oyelowo, Lupita Nyong'o
Summary - A Ugandan girl sees her world rapidly change after being introduced to the game of chess.
Cautions - Some thematic elements and a bad accident.
Commentary - It is hard to critique this film because of the sheer power of the story and how effectively the visuals transport you to the slums of Katwe. The performances feel desperately authentic giving weight to the drama between the mother and the coach. The movie is so good at embracing its characters and story that it easily overcomes any cinematic contrivances and the greater predictability around it with endless heart and a tangible soul. It's a great little film that ranks amongst the best of cinema's inspirational stories.
