City of Ember

• TOP NOTCH (my top choices)
• HONORABLE MENTION (well worth watching)
• YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER (I like them but you might not)
• CLASSICS (Great movies up through the 1960s - many don't have any rating)

CITY OF EMBER (2008) - PG - YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER
Saoirse Ronan, Toby Jones, Bill Murray

Summary -  For generations, the people of the City of Ember have flourished in an amazing world of glittering lights. But Ember's once powerful generator is failing ... and the great lamps that illuminate the city are starting to flicker.

Cautions - A couple of scenes that could be considered scary.

Commentary - The magic of the Jeanne DuPrau book is that readers don't know the mystery of the city - why there is no light except the lights of the city. Unfortunately, the movie trailer, the opening sequence and even the movie poster (shown above) reveal the secret. So all we're left with is the why. And although that's interesting, it's not as interesting as "Big" mystery.

Am I being vague enough?

Look, normally I don't advise people to read the book before they watch the film as often the film will not stand up to the book. But in this case, please read the book first. It's really good and I think you'll enjoy the movie better if you do.

There is lots to enjoy in the film. Amazing sets, good performances and an intriguing world. Even if it occasionally goes off course, City of Ember provides audiences with a thought-provoking and family-friendly adventure.
