That Thing You Do

• CLASSICS (Great movies up through the 1960s - many don't have any rating)

THAT THING YOU DO (1996) - PG - TOP NOTCH
Tom Hanks, Liv Tyler, Charlize Theron

Summary - A Pennsylvania band scores a hit in 1964 and rides the star-making machinery as long as it can, with lots of help from its manager.

Cautions -Some minor language.

Commentary - Do you like Tom Hanks? Would you like to know what a film would look like that was written, directed and performed by Tom Hanks? This movie is your chance to find out.

This is a "rags-to- riches" to... well, you'll see. The story focuses on the dreams of the four fresh-faced bandmates. Their journey is fun, funny, and as catchy as its title song. Although it's lighthearted, there is real heart to be found in the relationships of a brilliantly composed cast.

If you decide you like the film, I recommend the extended edition (available on DVD and blu-ray) which expands the story and developes the characters' histories, giving us a better sense of the intra-band relations, and filling out the on-tour experience.

My hat is off to Tom Everett Scott (playing the Jazz loving drummer), whose easy charisma, intelligence, passion and gentlemanliness make him one of my favorite characters in the world of movies.
