ALWAYS (1989) - PG - YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER
Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter, Brad Johnson |

Summary - A romantic adventure about a legendary pilot's passion for dare-devil firefighting and his girl.

Cautions - A little swearing.

Commentary - It's a sweet concept and has some very funny scenes with no shortage of gags and witty banter. In addition, Dreyfuss and Hunter have some nice chemistry together and, of course, the stunts and special effects are first-rate.

But the film is often cloying and overly sentimental, and it's too leisurely paced to keep us caring for its two-hour running time. If that's not enough, supporting characters are introduced and abruptly disappear, and Goodman and Hepburn don't have nearly enough to do.

The ending seems a bit like it is from another story. It's a sequence that is exciting and well-filmed but seems dropped in. Since the second half of the movie we had been following Ted's journey but the ending has Dorinda become the hero. This would have been fine if there were a logical progression of events to lead us there, but there wasn't.

This concept worked better in it's original concept as a war movie, but there is enough in this Steven Spielberg romantic/comedy/drama for me to suggest that you might want to consider it.
