The Man from Snowy River

• TOP NOTCH (my top choices)
• HONORABLE MENTION (well worth watching)
• YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER (I like them but you might not)
• CLASSICS (Great movies up through the 1960s - many don't have any rating)
THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER (1982) - PG - HONORABLE MENTION
Kirk Douglas, Tom Burlinson, Terence Donovan

Summary -  In 1880s Australia when young Jim Craig's father dies Jim takes a job at the Harrison cattle ranch and there he begins his journey to become a man.

Cautions - Some thematic elements

Commentary - Like John Henry or even King Arthur, this is the story of how a legend was born through the fires of adversity. The set pieces and the characters feel as raw and authentic as the landscape. Through his adventure, young Jim Craig discovers that he's stumbled across that he's more apart of than he realizes.

It's a low budget movie from the 80s and so you really need to see it on blu-ray for the best presentation. The music is captivating and are the personalities that populate the story. It's a great family adventure!

This is not an American western so don't expect those same kinds of motifs and storytelling styles. In The Man from Snowy River, there are no gunfighters, only regular folk. The drama comes from uncontrollable natural forces like the unpredictable mountain weather and the surging brumby mob, and from the equally powerful passions of the human heart.
