Benny & Joon

• TOP NOTCH (my top choices)
• HONORABLE MENTION (well worth watching)
• YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER (I like them but you might not)
• CLASSICS (Great movies up through the 1960s - many don't have any rating)

BENNY & JOON (1993) - PG - YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER
Johnny Depp, Mary Stuart Masterson, Aidan Quinn

Summary - A mentally ill young woman finds her love in an eccentric man who models himself after Buster Keaton.

Cautions - A scene of mild sensuality and one use of harsh language (F word)

Commentary - This is a film that is smarter than many romantic comedies in that it remains relatively lighthearted while still examining some interesting questions about mental illness, love and when self-sacrifice can be unhealthy.

Although it seems, at times, as though the director is telling the story, not as a seamless whole but as a tumble of scenes, the performances (most notably Johnny Depp) elevate this romantic fable way above its writing and directing shortcomings. Magical and quirky, this film may not be everyone's idea of romance but it has a unique charm. It's the dreamy, old-fashioned tone that you might find refreshing.
